Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has ordered hundreds of senior U.S. generals to meet urgently at a U.S. Marine Corps base in Virginia next week, The Washington Post reports, citing a source. The purpose of the meeting remains unknown, the newspaper notes.

"The highly unusual directive" was sent to virtually all senior U.S. military officials working around the world, sowing "confusion and anxiety" after the administration of President Donald Trump fired numerous leaders this year, the publication writes.

The piece points out that the decision to gather the generals came months after Hegseth's team at the Pentagon announced plans for a sweeping consolidation of top military commanders.
