For attempted coup d'état and ties to Russia.
Goraciu Potru has been detained in Dubai. He was a mercenary security guard for Romania's far-right pro-Russian presidential candidate Kelin Georgescu.
This was reported by HAF citing Romanian Justice Minister Radu Marinescu on Digi24 TV channel.
The minister said Romania is waiting for official confirmation from the United Arab Emirates authorities to proceed with the extradition procedure.
In late February, arrest warrants were issued for Potra, his son and a relative in absentia for attempting to commit acts against the country's constitutional order.
The 327-page indictment by the Prosecutor General's Office, cited by BBC reporters, notes that Romanian mercenaries with combat experience in African countries intended to stage a so-called "second revolution" to bring Kelin Georgescu to power.
The indictment provides details of meetings and correspondence between the conspirators and Georgescu in December 2024. Russia's active involvement in online promotion of Georgescu's candidacy on the eve of the presidential election is described.
Georgescu's participation in the election
Georgescu won the first round of the November 2024 presidential election with 23% of the vote. However, before the second round, the country's Constitutional Court canceled the election due to Russian interference.
Romanian authorities suspected him of vote rigging via TikTok and that Russia may be behind it.
An investigation was launched against people associated with Georgescu. As part of it, searches were conducted, during which they found weapons, ammunition, 25 kg of gold bars and huge amounts of cash in different currencies.
The local media called Horatiu Potru "Romanian Prigozhin" for his involvement in mercenary operations in Africa.
