Finland's President Urged The U.S. To Keep Key Military Equipment In Europe
Alexander Stubb

This includes aircraft carriers and radars.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that the US should keep key military equipment in Europe even if the number of US military personnel on the continent is reduced. He said this in an interview with POLITICO during a visit to New York, (translated by Charter97.org).

He said discussions about a possible redistribution of troops and equipment to the Indo-Pacific region are understandable, but Europe remains strategically important and "very profitable" for Washington. "I am sure there will be reductions, but I don't know yet how serious," Stubb noted.

The main thing for NATO allies, according to the Finnish leader, is to keep "key elements" in Europe, including aircraft carriers and radars. Between 70,000 and 90,000 US troops are now stationed on the continent, a number that has grown since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The total length of Finland's border with Russia is more than 1,300 kilometers. Stubb confirmed that he had discussed the situation on the frontline in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump, and these contacts are believed to have influenced a change in the US president's rhetoric. Stubb called Trump's recent statements that Ukraine is capable of regaining all the lost territories a "turning point."

The Finnish president emphasized that relations between Europe and the US under Trump are better now than in 2016, and the dialog between Washington and Kiev remains "open and honest."

Talking about Russia, Stubb noted that the country's economy is under serious pressure - reserves are exhausted, inflation and interest rates have exceeded 20%, and growth is close to zero. "Russia is already paying the price for the war," he said, adding that NATO's unity and firmness must be demonstrated if a truce is to be reached.
