German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful said that NATO is ready to defend its territory against any Russian invasion, while adding that the Alliance has no desire to escalate the conflict with Russia.

The German diplomatic chief's warning is the latest sign of Europe's frustration with what he called an attempt by Kremlin mastermind Vladimir Putin to test NATO's defense capabilities.

"Our countries are not interested in escalation, but Russia may want to trap us. So we are ready to defend our territory. And Russia must know that it will not have any chance to defeat us," Wadeful emphasized.

He also echoed a warning by Germany and its allies that Russia may be in a position to attack NATO territory before the end of the decade.

He referred to the sharp increase in military spending that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's ruling coalition has launched as part of a pledge to turn Germany's armed forces into the strongest army in Europe.
