Intelligence: Russia Is Losing Influence In Latin America

The sanctions have weakened Moscow's position.

International sanctions imposed after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine have significantly reduced Russia's geopolitical influence in Latin America.

The Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine reports that.

The initiative known as the Primakov Doctrine, which envisioned active expansion of cooperation with the countries of the region, is now reduced mainly to formal diplomatic gestures. These include exchanges of delegations, student programs and meetings at a secondary level.

Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, countries with long-standing ties to the Soviet Union, remain Moscow's main partners.

The sharp decline in military-technical cooperation

Sanctions pressure has led to a marked drop in military-technical cooperation. Russia has long been a supplier of Soviet-style arms to the region, but the war in Ukraine has significantly depleted its stockpile.

No major arms contracts have been recorded in recent years. Moreover, a number of Latin American countries are now considering options to modernize or completely replace obsolete systems, and are increasingly negotiating with the United States.

Reinforcing the role of Iran and China

With Russia's weakening position, other international players are increasing their presence in the region. Iran is actively increasing its arms supplies, while China is focusing on scientific and military cooperation and strategic partnerships.

Moscow's former influence in Latin America is thus rapidly diminishing, and its place is gradually being taken by other forces that offer the region's states new models of cooperation.
