On Friday, the Belarusian national soccer team will play the first match for the World Cup 2026 selection, which will be hosted by the United States. The first opponent will be the national team of Greece. On Tuesday, our national team held the last training session and went to the away match on Wednesday, writes Onlíner.
Who was called up to the national team?
The coach of the Belarusian national team Carlos Alos before the matches of the qualifying tournament stopped his choice on the following players.
Goalkeepers: Pavel Pavlyuchenko (ML Vitebsk), Sergei Ignatovich (Zhenis, Kazakhstan), Fedor Lapoukhov (CSKA Sofia, Bulgaria).

Forwards: Yuri Kovalev (Baltika, Russia), Pavel Sedko (Torpedo-BELAZ), German Barkovsky (Piast, Poland), Trofim Melnichenko ("Porto", Portugal), Evgeny Malashevich ("Dynamo-Minsk"), Roman Pasevich ("Mura", Slovenia).
It should be noted that there are four debutants among them: forward Roman Pasevich, who moved this summer to Slovenian "Mura", defender Vladislav Kalinin, midfielders Evgeni Malashevich and Maksim Myakish. All these guys play for Minsk "Dynamo".
Who will we play with?
The draw determined Scotland, Greece and Denmark in the group to Belarusians. All these teams in the FIFA ranking are above ours, and Scotland and Denmark participated in the last European Championship, which was held in Germany in 2024. Denmark then reached the 1/8 finals, where they lost to the hosts - 0:2. With the Greeks now everything is a little more modest: the national team of this country last participated in the top tournament in 2014, when it reached the 1/8 finals. Despite this, the team produces strong matches. In the fall of 2024, Greece defeated England (2:1) and Ireland (2:1) in the Nations League, later defeated Scotland (3:0), and recently defeated Slovakia (4:1) and Bulgaria (4:0) in friendlies.

September 5. Greece - Belarus.
September 8. Belarus - Scotland.
October 9. Belarus - Denmark.
October 12. Scotland - Belarus.
November 15. Denmark - Belarus.
November 18. Belarus - Greece.
What are the objectives set for the national team?
The goal is to reach the playoffs. Chairman of the Football Federation Evgeniy Buloychik told reporters.
- Today the executive committee has set the task - to reach the playoffs. We understand that the task is not easy, but I want to note: soccer in the world has changed. Just a couple of figures: the last six World Cups have been won by different countries; Brazil have been medal-less in the last five and Italy have not participated in the last two. Yes, the level of other teams has certainly risen, but I can see the great spirit of our national team. Yesterday (Monday - Onlíner note) I attended the training session. The guys deserve to be believed in. And the fact that we now have a full grandstand should make the guys happy, because this is the first selection for the World Cup, where we will not play at home and all games will be away. Of course, it is impossible not to remember these emotions of the guys who sincerely believe in our team. So we will believe - including me.
- What were you basing on when you set such a goal for the national team? - Onlíner correspondent asked Eugen Bulojčík.
- A concept has been developed, approved from 2022 to 2028. Seven executors participated in its preparation. This is a collegial decision, not personally made by me. And when the selection of the head coach took place, it was based on that. It doesn't matter who would be the coach, and it doesn't matter who would be the head of the federation.
- As a person who loves soccer, you must have seen the matches of the national teams of Greece and Scotland. What can you say about the opponents?
- I think that our team is able to gain points in every game. The absence of fans is a very fundamental moment. I am sure that if we played at the National Stadium, there would be crazy support. I played myself and I know what it is to play with and without fans. But we should not write it off, we just believe in our guys.
