The U.S. President's special envoy will leave office by the end of the year.
US Presidential Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Whitkoff will resign by the end of the year, The Times of Israel reports, citing a source.
Whitkoff serves as a special government employee, which limits his term of office to 130 days, with the possibility of extension. According to the media interlocutor, the special envoy is preparing to leave the post due to the likely imminent end of the war in the Gaza Strip.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu accepted US President Donald Trump's plan to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Hamas, as reported by Al Jazeera TV, received the document for review. If the sides strike a deal, Steve Whitkoff could "leave gracefully," The Times of Israel's source added.
Besides term limits, image risks may have influenced the decision. In August, Whitkoff was criticized for breaking protocol at a meeting with Putin, where Trump's envoy arrived without an interpreter or stenographer. Reuters reported that this caused distortions in reports and confusion in the U.S. administration.
