We need real firepower.

Europe must ramp up military production faster to catch up with Russia. The alliance has approved more ambitious spending targets this year, but it is not enough.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this, reports The Guardian.

"Money alone cannot provide security. You need capabilities, real firepower, heavy equipment, and new technology. And that's what our defense industry across the Alliance needs to deliver faster than ever in Europe and in the United States. We are simply not producing enough across the Alliance," Rutte said.

Progress in ammunition production

The NATO chief noted that the situation has already started to change. In particular, it has been possible to increase the production of ammunition and gradually replenish stockpiles.

"We are gradually replenishing stocks and reducing the production gap with Russia," he emphasized. Separately, Rutte thanked the Czech Republic for its contribution to defense supplies.

Military Challenges

Rutte spoke at the IISS Prague Defense Summit. He stressed the need to increase European military capabilities to defend the continent.

He said Russia and China are investing huge amounts of money in modernizing armies. These weapons are already being used against Ukraine, and Europe must consider future threats.

Russia as a destabilizing factor

"This trend will not change or reverse anytime soon. Russia remains and will remain a destabilizing and confrontational force in Europe and in the world for the foreseeable future," Rutte said.

He noted that Europe should not be naive and has a duty to respond to challenges in order to maintain security.
