In Washington, they are demanding stronger action from India.

US President Donald Trump is refusing to approve one of the options for a trade deal with India until the country commits to reduce its purchases of Russian oil. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on Thursday, September 4, citing three sources familiar with the discussions.

In response to the publication's inquiry, White House deputy spokeswoman Anna Kelly pointed to the "respectful relationship" between Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Teams from the U.S. and India maintain close communication across the full range of diplomatic, defense and trade priorities of our strategic partnership," she stressed. The State Department in turn noted that "India must do more" to allay US concerns on trade issues.

WP recalls that Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that India buys most of its oil and military products from Russia and only a small share from the US. At the same time, authorities in New Delhi are proposing to reduce trade duties to zero, "but it's too late," he added, calling economic relations with India a "completely one-sided disaster."

According to Axios, the US is urging Europe to include additional trade duties for India and China, which continue to purchase Russian energy products amid Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. "The Europeans cannot prolong this war and harbor unreasonable expectations while expecting America to bear the costs," a senior White House official told the publication.

Additional US duties for India

Additional US customs duties of 50% for India went into effect at the end of August. Trump explained the need for the tough measure by seeking to punish India for not abandoning its purchases of Russian oil, despite the fact that Moscow uses energy revenues to finance the war against Ukraine, among other things.

In turn, Indian authorities consider "unjustified and unreasonable" the criticism of the US and EU in connection with its imports of Russian oil. New Delhi emphasizes that it started importing oil from Russia after its traditional suppliers were reoriented towards Europe following the outbreak of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. At the same time, the U.S. "at the time actively encouraged such imports to India for the sake of strengthening the stability of global energy markets," the Indian Foreign Ministry said in early August.
