US Proposes To Send Peacekeepers From Saudi Arabia And Bangladesh To Ukraine

Washington is ready to take over monitoring of the buffer zone with drones and satellites.

If a peace agreement is reached between Russia and Ukraine, the U.S. could take the lead in monitoring the buffer zone that would be created between the armies of the two states. But in any case, this would be remote monitoring, while peacekeepers from third countries could be invited to monitor on the ground. Such a plan is being discussed by the militaries of countries allied to Ukraine, including the United States, four people with knowledge of it told NBC News.

The buffer zone would be a large demilitarized area whose borders have not yet been defined. It could be guarded by troops from one or more non-NATO countries, such as Saudi Arabia or even Bangladesh, the sources told NBC. Such activities would not be limited to land, because it is also necessary that Russia does not interfere with Ukraine's economic activities. Turkey will therefore be responsible for ensuring the unimpeded movement of goods and services across the Black Sea. During the war, it had already acted as a guarantor under the year-old "grain deal" that allowed Ukraine to resume exporting agricultural products by sea.

The presence of US troops on Ukrainian territory is not envisioned, as Donald Trump has stated. But thanks to its technological capabilities, the U.S. could take the lead in monitoring the buffer zone, using drones and satellites as well as other intelligence capabilities, suggest the planners of the plan, acting under the direction of General Dan Kane, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The U.S. would coordinate its actions with other countries also conducting surveillance.

According to a U.S. official, the week after Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Kaine briefed the president on four options for security guarantees and advised the one in which the U.S. would participate to the greatest extent possible.

NBC's interlocutors did not say Trump supported or rejected any of the options.

In Thursday's talks between European countries that are part of the "coalition of the willing" and Trump, the U.S. president made no specific promises about the support the Pentagon could provide as part of security guarantees for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron said Washington would prepare such proposals in the coming days.
