A reason has been given.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has decided to resign to avoid a split within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. This is according to Reuters, citing public broadcaster NHK.
The Prime Minister's Office has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Under Ishiba's leadership, the LDP-led coalition lost its majority in elections to both houses of parliament. This comes amid voter discontent over the rising cost of living.
Shigeru Ishiba was born in 1957. He has been chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party since September 27, 2024, and prime minister of Japan since October 1 of the same year.
