Mass Protests Erupted In Istanbul

Clashes with the police began.

Istanbul residents protested outside the headquarters of the opposition People's Republican Party (HDP) after the political organization's leadership was removed from office and the management was handed over to an interim council, Hurriyet reported. During the rally, protesters banged pots in disagreement with the government's actions. There were also several clashes between protesters and police.

The decision to suspend the leadership of the Istanbul branch of the CHP was handed down by an Istanbul civil court on September 2. It annulled the results of the congress held in 2023, which elected one of the party's leaders, Ozgur Celik, as the head of the branch. The court considered that Çelik may have bribed delegates to get elected as chairman and ordered an interim administration in the İstanbul branch of the PPR led by another party member, Gürsel Tekin. The latter announced that he would go to work on Monday. ANP leader Özgür Özel called for the court decision to overturn Çelik's suspension. "You have made a historic mistake <...> this is my last warning," Özel warned.

The youth branches of the ANP said they "will not give away our democracy to proxies" and called for a move to the party's Istanbul office. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that "ignoring court rulings and trying to take people to the streets is a clear disregard for the law." "The state will resolutely take necessary measures against every illegal attempt. We will never allow the public order and tranquility of our country to be violated," Yerlikaya emphasized.
