Russian opposition activist Ilya Yashin, who found himself abroad as a result of a prisoner exchange in August 2024, said that he had been stripped of his Russian citizenship. He specified that he learned about it from his lawyer, who discovered the corresponding certificate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs during familiarization with the materials of the criminal case on the failure to fulfill the duties of a "foreign agent" initiated against the politician.
The document, where Yashin is labeled as a "stateless person," was issued five days after the prisoner exchange. The Interior Ministry certificate also says that the politician is banned from entering Russia on the basis of Article 27, paragraph 1, part 1, clause 1 of Federal Law No. 114, i.e., "for the purpose of ensuring the defense or security of the state." At the same time, according to the Constitution, a person who received it by birthright cannot be deprived of Russian citizenship. Yashin said he would look into the incident. "If the information of the Russian Interior Ministry submitted to the court is confirmed, then we are dealing with the most important precedent and a new round of arbitrariness of Putin's power," he said.
Russian authorities have previously deprived only acquired citizenship, notes The Moscow Times For example, in July this was faced by Dmitry Kisiev, the former chief of staff of former presidential candidate Boris Nadezhdin, who received a Russian passport after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
