David O'Sullivan will meet with U.S. officials.
The European Union's special representative for sanctions David O'Sullivan is in Washington on September 8 to discuss with U.S. administration officials increased pressure on Russia. This was reported by CNN television channel, citing unnamed interlocutors familiar with the matter.
The EU sanctions envoy is expected to meet with U.S. Treasury Department officials to discuss and agree on potential measures against Moscow in the wake of Russia's escalating war against Ukraine.
The meetings come amid U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he is ready to impose new measures against Moscow.
The meetings will include representatives from the White House, the U.S. State Department and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the interlocutors said, describing the talks as a sign of progress on newly agreed sanctions against Russia.
On Sept. 7, Trump said European leaders were expected to arrive in Washington earlier this week to discuss the war. It is unclear whether he was referring to O'Sullivan or other leaders. The White House did not specify who it was referring to.
