A significant portion of the funds will be used to strengthen NATO's eastern flank.
The European Commission has approved a loan to Poland in the amount of 43.7 billion euros within the framework of the EU program SAFE ("Security Action for Europe"). This was announced by Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. In a statement to X, he noted that a total of 19 applications were submitted for a total amount of 150 billion euros.
The Defense Minister emphasized that a significant part of the funds will be used to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. According to him, this decision is of key importance for Poland's future capabilities and the acceleration of the army's transformation program. He also added that the country's military industry should soon become one of the driving forces of the national economy.
Kosiniak-Kamysz explained that the funding will be used to produce Piorun short-range surface-to-air missile systems, Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles, Baobab-K remote minesweeping vehicles and other weapons needed for border defense. A special emphasis, the minister said, will be placed on the Eastern Shield (Tarcza Wschod) program, as well as on the development of unmanned systems and air and missile defense equipment.
"This whole system is linked to the security of the eastern flank of the European Union, and therefore the eastern flank of NATO," he stressed.
In July, Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that Poland had applied for a loan of up to 45 billion euros under the SAFE program. At the time, he called the move "a real investment in security and defense industry development."
The SAFE program, established during Poland's presidency of the Council of the EU at Warsaw's initiative, is part of the EU's ambitious 2030 rearmament plan. It provides for preferential lending to EU member states for a total of 150 billion euros for defense investments. In addition to Poland, Belgium, Bulgaria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Spain and the Czech Republic have applied for participation.
