CNN has learned the purpose of the visit.
A US State Department team visited Venezuela for the first time since the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 9. This was informed by CNN, citing a US official.
According to him, diplomats and security officials from the Venezuelan Affairs Division, as well as acting US Ambassador to Colombia John McNamara traveled to Caracas "to conduct an initial assessment of a potential phased reengagement."
The US is reportedly set to reopen its embassy in Caracas after Washington recalled its diplomats and suspended the embassy in the Venezuelan capital in 2019. Until recently, the Venezuelan affairs office worked with a team of U.S. diplomats at the embassy in Bogota, Colombia.
A senior State Department official said earlier this week that the department was "preparing to reopen" the U.S. embassy in Venezuela "if the president makes that decision."
The media interlocutor said talks are ongoing about meetings between U.S. diplomats and Venezuela's interim political leadership, but they will not take place during this trip.
On January 9, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said it had begun a "preliminary diplomatic process" with the United States aimed at "restoring diplomatic missions in both countries."
