They are now safe at the Italian embassy in Caracas.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that the Venezuelan authorities have released two Italian prisoners. This is reported by Bloomberg.
Meloni said humanitarian aid worker Alberto Trentini and businessman Mario Burlo have been released and are now safe in the Italian embassy in Caracas.
The Italian prime minister expressed "joy and satisfaction" over their release and added that she has already had time to talk to them. She also thanked Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez for the "constructive cooperation" she has shown.
Meloni noted that a number of local and foreign prisoners have been released in the country since the US ousted Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro in a surprise attack earlier this month.
The Italian prime minister previously revealed that her government has been working "daily" to free prisoners in Venezuela for more than 400 days. "The work is being done through political, diplomatic and intelligence channels," she explained.
