Lithuanian President: I Am Against Lifting Sanctions On Belarusian Potash
Gitanas Nauseda

The position of Vilnius remains principled.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda has categorically opposed the lifting of European sanctions on Belarusian potash and the resumption of transit of Belarusian fertilizers through the port of Klaipeda. Washington, which recently lifted its sanctions against Belaruskali, may start putting pressure on Vilnius, but, apparently, Nauseda is ready to counteract this.

In an interview with the Lithuanian edition of LRT, Nauseda said that he intends to defend a tough position on the issue of lifting European sanctions on Belarusian potash. According to him, this issue causes him "only a sad smile."

"Because I was probably one of the most ardent supporters of sanctions against Belarusian fertilizers in all formats - in the European Council and outside it," explained the president.

Nauseda added that he was discussing the topic of possible lifting of sanctions on Belarusian potash with the leaders of neighboring countries, in particular, with the Prime Minister of Poland, the Prime Minister of Latvia, as well as with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"I asked his opinion on how events may develop further. In any case, Lithuania's position remains very firm. He understands our position, understands the expediency of the sanctions imposed against Belarus. He has always supported it himself, although, perhaps, many of these sanctions were imposed even earlier," Nauseda said about the details of the bilateral talks.
