Amid a crackdown on protests.
President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola announced a ban on visits to the institution for Iranian diplomats.
This was reported by Politico on Monday, January 12.
The ban was announced in Roberta Metsola's letter to MEPs. In this way, Europe reacted to the Iranian regime's repression of anti-government protesters.
The visit ban for representatives of official Tehran will apply to all European Parliament buildings in Brussels and Strasbourg, where the main debates take place, as well as its secretariat in Luxembourg.
According to the publication, any Iranian passport holder will be checked at the door and those working for the current regime will be denied access.
"The people of Iran can continue to rely on the support, solidarity and action of this parliament," Roberta Metsola said in her letter. Earlier, she raised the possibility of new EU sanctions on Iran.
Politico also notes that the EU is trying to decide what specific measures it can take in support of Iranian protesters other than expressing sympathy. In particular, the initiative to recognize the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization is being considered.
Anti-government protests in Iran have been going on for more than two weeks, despite tough measures by the authorities. Human Rights Activists News Agency said several hundred people have already been killed in protest-related violence. More than 10,000 protesters have been detained.
