State Department Urged U.S. Citizens To Leave Iran Immediately

Protests across the country are intensifying.

The U.S. State Department and the virtual embassy in Tehran have issued a warning to its citizens to leave the country immediately.

The Clash Report and the website of the U.S. virtual embassy in Iran reported.

The warning was issued Monday as Iran began a third week of anti-government demonstrations that have left hundreds dead and thousands detained, according to human rights organizations and media outlets.

In particular, the embassy said in a statement, protests across Iran are intensifying and could escalate into a population that will lead to arrests and injuries.

In addition, heightened security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions and internet blockades continue. Also, the Irin government has restricted access to mobile, landline and national internet networks.

Airlines too continue to restrict or cancel flights to and from Iran. And several companies have suspended flights through Friday, January 16.

"U.S. citizens should expect continued internet outages, plan alternative means of communication and, if safe to do so, consider leaving Iran by land to Armenia or Turkey," the embassy stressed.

It also spelled out a series of actions for U.S. citizens:

immediately leave Iran, develop a plan to leave the country;

if there is no possibility to leave Iran, you should find a safe place inside your home or in another safe building;

stock food, water, medicine and other necessary items;

avoid demonstrations, behave inconspicuously and be attentive to your surroundings;

track local media to keep up with the latest news and be prepared to adjust your plans;

keep your phone charged and stay in touch with family and friends to update them on your condition;

register with the STEP program to get the latest security information in Iran.

The U.S. virtual embassy has also issued a warning for citizens who intend to leave the country. Specifically, those with both U.S. and Iranian citizenship should leave the country on Iranian passports.

"The Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship and will treat individuals with dual U.S.-Iranian citizenship solely as Iranian citizens. U.S. citizens are at significant risk of interrogation, arrest, and detention in Iran. Presenting a U.S. passport or proof of ties to the United States may be sufficient reason for a person to be detained by Iranian authorities," the publication said.

It added that the U.S. government cannot guarantee the safety of its citizens if they decide to leave the country. The embassy emphasized that people should leave only if they consider it safe.

Protests in Iran and Trump's plans

Remember that the first protests began on December 28. The reason was a sharp fall in the national currency, which hit business. It was because of this that traders in Tehran's central market took to the streets.
