What is known.
U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Whitkoff held a secret meeting with the son of the last Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, over the weekend to discuss the protests sweeping the Islamic Republic, Axios reports, citing an unnamed U.S. official. This is the first such high-level contact.
Axios notes that Pahlavi is positioning himself as a possible "transitional leader" in Iran. Over the past two weeks, he has been active on U.S. television stations, calling on Donald Trump to intervene and support the protests. However, according to the portal's source, the US president's administration was surprised that demonstrators at some of the protests started chanting his name.
Trump himself, commenting on possible developments in Iran, called Pahlavi a "good man" but said he did not think it was appropriate to hold a meeting with him as US president at the moment. "I think it's better to give everybody an opportunity to go there on their own and see who can come forward," the US leader said (quoted by Reuters).
