Because of the politician's desire to "stay with Denmark".
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said at a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that the island "chooses Denmark" and will not be owned and governed by Washington. The statement drew the ire of US President Donald Trump.
"If we have to choose between the US and Denmark right now, we will choose Denmark, NATO and the EU," Nielsen's statement was quoted by The Guardian.
He added that "the island's aim and desire is for peaceful dialogue with an emphasis on cooperation." He said Trump's desire to take over the island was also a matter of "international law and our right to our own country."
The US president reacted sharply to the statement, lashing out at Nielsen with threats.
The journalists asked Trump to comment on the claim that Greenland wants to remain in an alliance with Denmark, to which he asked: "Who said that?"
Hearing that the statement was voiced by Greenland's prime minister, Trump said he "doesn't know who he is" and "doesn't know anything about him."
"Well, that's their problem. I don't agree with him. I don't know anything about him, but it's going to be a big problem for him," said the White House chief of staff.
