So that the protesters have access to the internet.
Ilon Musk's company Ilon Musk SpaseX is now offering free access to Starlink in Iran amid deadly protests and a multi-day blackout.
It was reported by Bloomberg.
According to Ahmad Ahmadian, executive director of the U.S.-based Holistic Resilience, an organization that works with Iranians to provide secure Internet access, SpaceX has waived subscription fees for Starlink in Iran. Thus terminal owners can user the service for free.
A source familiar with Starlink's operations also confirmed the service is free.
Although Starlink terminals are banned in Iran, many have been smuggled across the country's border despite the risks. Ahmadian estimated in a phone interview with Bloomberg that there are more than 50,000 such devices in Iran.
According to Amir Rashidi, director of digital rights at the Miaan Group, a human rights organization, the Iranian military is working to suppress Starlink's signal and track down users.
In particular, Iranian state TV channel IRIB News reported Tuesday that authorities seized "a large shipment of electronic equipment used for espionage and sabotage," including devices that look like Starlink terminals in the video footage.
Bloomberg notes that Rashidi also confirmed free access to Starlink services in Iran.
According to NetBlocks , an organization that tracks Internet connectivity, a nationwide Internet outage in Iran has been going on for five days, depriving millions of people of access to online services.
