Prices In Belarus Are Out Of Control

Inflation refused to listen to the government.

What is good about the plans of the Belarusian government is that they do not interfere with anyone. The economy is separate, but the plans are also separate. This year, the authorities planned that inflation would not exceed 5%. And now they are happy that it suddenly turned out to be less than 7%. However, the authorities' merits here are minimal. Despite all the price regulation, the main merit in slowing down the Belarusian inflation belongs to the Russian Central Bank. But this does not prevent the government from further planning, writes planmedia.io.

According to the National Statistics Committee, annual inflation in Belarus slowed down to 6.8% in December. A month ago it amounted to 7%. Food prices rose by 9%. Non-food prices increased by only 3%. And although the plan for this year was to ensure inflation below 5%, the authorities began to be proud of their achievements in advance.

"We see a certain reduction of pro-inflationary factors at the end of the year. We will not go beyond 7 percent in 2025," said head of the National Bank Roman Golovchenko in an interview with Belarusian television on December 29.

But there is a nuance. The slowdown of inflation in Belarus suspiciously coincided with similar processes in Russia. During the week from December 16 to 22, annual inflation in Russia slowed down to 5.98% compared to 6.08 a week earlier. So even the head of the Belarusian National Bank noticed the coincidence.

"During the three weeks of December, this was largely influenced by the disinflationary impact of the Russian economy," he said.

But the main thing is not who gets the credit. The main thing is who can then report on the achievements. MART has already laid out a clear monthly plan for prices on how they should rise in 2026. Starting with a 0.7 percent increase in January and ending at seven percent by January-December.

"We intend to hold tight to our inflation plans. I will insist very much or take all measures to ensure that we do not go beyond 5 percent," promised Golovchenko.

That is, it was enough for inflation in Russia to fall slightly, so that the Belarusian National Bank again had grandiose plans. Five-percent inflation was again in play. And if Russia suddenly fails to meet expectations, the plans can always be canceled. Anyway, these plans do not interfere with anyone and do not affect anything.
