Armenia Rules Out Russia's Participation In Trump's Route Project

The Russian Federation is being squeezed out of the South Caucasus.

Russia will not participate in Trump's Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project that will link Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan through Armenian territory, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said. "Russia's participation in the project has not been discussed. The framework of TRIPP's activities is already clear," the minister said at a press conference in Washington, writes The Moscow Times.

He assured that Yerevan has "no goal to exclude" Moscow and that "all close and not-so-close neighbors benefit from unblocking" transport communications in the region. Mirzoyan also recalled that Russia in Armenia "has a presence in different infrastructures, for example, in railroads." "This for Russia can create opportunities for communication, cooperation with TRIPP," the Armenian foreign minister said.

Before that, Mirzoyan and his American counterpart Marco Rubio approved a joint statement on the implementation of the Trump Route Project (TRIPP), and agreed to create a joint TRIPP Development Company, which will manage it and own the rights to develop the route for another 49 years. 74% of its shares will go to the US, 26% to Armenia. Later, Yerevan's share may increase to 49%.

After the project is implemented, Armenia will receive development and investments, and the U.S. will get new transportation directions and markets, the parties said in a statement. Yerevan will retain full control over its territory, laws and borders, but will have to actively support the project: coordinate government agencies, issue permits, communicate with the U.S. and promote normalization of relations with neighboring countries. Secretary Rubio noted that TRIPP "opens Armenia to business and allows it to prosper economically, but does so in a way that in no way infringes on Armenia's sovereignty".
