That's the amount the island has been valued at by scientists and former U.S. officials.
Buying Greenland could cost the United States $700 billion, more than half of the Pentagon's annual budget, NBC News reported, citing three informed sources. The island has been valued at that amount by scientists and former US officials.
Trump has instructed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prepare a proposal to buy Greenland in the coming weeks, a plan that has become a priority for the US president, the network found out.
The Times previously wrote that the Trump administration could gain control of Greenland in four ways: to influence by force, buy the island, offer a free association agreement or allow a combination - for example, maintaining Greenland's status as a Danish territory while increasing the U.S. presence.
At the same time, U.S. officials have discussed the possibility of sending lump sum payments to Greenlanders as part of an attempt to persuade them to "separate from Denmark," Reuters has learned. We are talking about amounts from $10 thousand to $100 thousand per person. The island has a population of about 57,000 people and is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
On January 12, a bill to "annex Greenland" and grant it the status of a U.S. state was introduced in the U.S. Congress. According to Republican Congressman Randy Fine, the amendments are aimed at safeguarding strategic U.S. national security interests in the Arctic and countering growing threats from China and Russia.
