Iranian Vessel In Distress In The Caspian Sea

Iranian Vessel In Distress In The Caspian Sea

The media links it to arms supplies to the Russian Federation.

On January 14, an Iranian dry cargo ship Rona was wrecked in the Caspian Sea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan informed.

"Turkmenistan's coastal services in the Caspian Sea received an SOS signal from the Iranian dry cargo ship Rona in distress. Turkmenistan's state bodies [...] took all necessary measures to rescue people," the report said.

Turkmen diplomats noted that "as a result of timely measures" all 14 people on the ship were rescued.

"According to preliminary information, they are citizens of Iran and India," the Foreign Ministry pointed out.

According to the VesselFinder ship tracking service, the last port where the Iranian vessel was was Russia's Astrakhan.

Russian publication "Important Stories" reported today that Rona from October 2024 to December 2025, 20 times called at the ports of the Russian cities of Astrakhan, Makhachkala and Azov, and went there from the Iranian ports of Amirabad and Anzali.

The media recalled that in 2023 CNN wrote that it is between Astrakhan and Amirabad with Anzali is the main route of probable maritime deliveries of weapons from Iran to Russia.

This route, according to The Wall Street Journal, was used to deliver hundreds of thousands of artillery shells and other munitions to Russia.

Social networks published a photo of the allegedly sinking ship, but the authenticity of the image has not been confirmed.
