Prime Minister of Lithuania told how the Americans helped to solve the issue with weather probes from Belarus.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginenė said that the United States warned the Lithuanian side about its intentions regarding Belarus, but did not exert pressure to ease sanctions, writes Delfi.lt. According to her, the Americans only noted that they planned to discuss the topic of potash fertilizers with Belarus, stressing that it did not concern Lithuania. After that, they did not return to the issue again, and the Lithuanian government did not develop the topic without additional signals.
Ruginenė also said that the United States helped Lithuania to solve the problem with smuggled weather probes from Belarus, which paralyzed the work of Lithuanian airports last fall.
Diplomatic attempts to reach an agreement with Minsk failed then, as there was no response from the Belarusian side, nor any desire to stop the flights of probes.
In the end, the closure of the border by Lithuania and U.S. support allowed to reduce the intensity of the hybrid attack and resume diplomatic dialog.
The Lithuanian Prime Minister said that cooperation with the U.S. continues now - including for the release of Lithuanian trucks detained in Belarus. She noted that contacts with the U.S. side take place on a daily basis and concern not only the transportation sector. Ruginenė also mentioned the December release of political prisoners in Belarus and emphasized that there were many issues that Lithuania was coordinating with the U.S. in the future.
