NATO allies have already sent military personnel to the island.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump's recent statements regarding Greenland, European officials are considering several scenarios to protect the world's largest island from possible actions by Washington.
According to The Economist, Europe is developing three scenarios for Greenland's defense. NATO allies have already sent some 35 military personnel to the island to bolster defenses.
Scenario #1: "Détente." An attempt to convince the U.S. side that Russia and China do not pose a threat and create an Arctic Sentinel mission.
Scenario #2: "Deterrence and Countermeasures." This scenario involves economic pressure on the U.S., including sanctions against companies extracting Greenland resources without authorization, a possible sell-off of U.S. government bonds, and the closure of U.S. military bases in Europe.
Scenario #3: "Waiting for a New Target" - counts on Trump to switch to other issues, such as Iran or the 2026 election, and that his statements about Greenland are a strategic bluff to gain concessions from Denmark.
European governments are closely monitoring the situation and considering measures to protect strategic interests. Securing Greenland has become a priority for Denmark and NATO, and working groups are preparing for talks with the U.S. as early as Jan. 18.
