US Imposes Sanctions Against 'architects' Of Brutal Crackdown On Peaceful Protests In Iran

The U.S. Treasury will use every tool to prosecute them.

The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against the "architects" of the violent crackdown on peaceful protests in Iran and shadow banking networks that "enable Iran's elite to embezzle and launder the proceeds of the country's natural resources." This was stated in a statement by the department.

"The United States stands firmly with the Iranian people in their quest for freedom and justice. At the direction of President Trump, the Treasury Department is imposing sanctions against key Iranian leaders involved in the brutal suppression of the Iranian people. Treasury will use every tool to pursue those behind the regime's tyrannical trampling of human rights," U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.

The sanctions lists included:

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme Committee for National Security, responsible for coordinating and responding to protests on behalf of the country's Supreme Leader;

Mohammad Reza Hashemifar, commander of Iran's Law Enforcement Forces (LEF) in Lorestan province, implicated in crimes against civilians;

Nematollah Bagheri - commander of the IRGC in Lorestan province, where security forces shot civilians;

Azizollah Maleki - commander of the LEF in Fars province, where forces suppressed protests and killed demonstrators;

Yadollah Bouali - IRGC commander in Fars province, responsible for violent actions against peaceful protesters in Shiraz.

The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has also placed on the sanctions lists 18 individuals and entities that play a key role in laundering proceeds from sales of Iranian oil and petrochemical products to foreign markets through the clandestine "shadow banking" networks of sub-sanctioned Iranian financial institutions Bank Melli and Shahr Bank.

"Instead of channeling these proceeds for the benefit of the Iranian people, who are facing an economic catastrophe amid crippling inflation and huge deficits caused by the regime's economic incompetence, the funds are being used to finance repression at home and support terrorist groups abroad," the Finance Ministry said.

The sanctions mean that all assets and property interests of the designated persons located in the United States or under the control of U.S. persons are blocked. Any entities that are directly or indirectly owned 50% or more by one or more of the blocked persons are also considered blocked. Unless authorized by OFAC or subject to exemptions, all transactions by or within the U.S. persons (or in transit through the U.S.) involving the property or interests of blocked persons are prohibited.
