Baku is pushing Russia out of Europe's energy market.
Azerbaijan has started supplying natural gas to Germany and Austria, state-run energy concern Socar said on Friday, January 16. The gas is supplied to Europe via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which runs from the Greek-Turkish border through Greece and Albania to southern Italy. From there, the fuel is transported further north to Austria and Germany, DW reports.
Socar noted that deliveries through Italy to Austria and Germany will expand the geography of Azerbaijani gas exports in Europe. With the entry into new markets, the number of countries importing Azerbaijani gas has risen to 16.
Demand for gas from Azerbaijan has increased as European countries seek to reduce their dependence on supplies from Russia following its armed invasion of Ukraine. In June, Socar signed a ten-year contract with German energy holding Sefe to supply 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas a year.
Sefe was formerly known as Gazprom Germania and was rescued from bankruptcy by the German government at the height of the 2022 energy crisis.
A Socar source said Austria could receive up to 1 billion cubic meters of gas a year. In 2025, the total volume of Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe amounted to 12.8 billion cubic meters. Further increase in supplies, as noted, will depend on investments and expansion of pipeline infrastructure capacity.
