At the same time, additional forces are being prepared to be moved by air and land
Amid mass protests in Iran and harsh statements by US President Donald Trump against the Iranian regime, Washington is moving an aircraft carrier to the Middle East.
This is reported by Fox News with reference to military sources.
The build-up of the US military presence, they said, is designed to expand the set of options for the White House in case it decides to strike Iran.
At the same time, the U.S. is preparing to move additional forces by air and land, as well as strengthen missile defenses.
These moves are part of what officials described as a "force generation" process.
The plan is to deploy air defense systems to protect U.S. bases and Israel. One source said that if the White House host orders the use of force, it would involve "something different - more aggressive" than previous US military operations in the region.
The source said that Washington was preparing a number of scenarios that would depend on how the Iranian regime acts in the coming days.
Now there are about 30,000 US troops in the area of responsibility of the US Central Command in the Middle East region. Two additional aircraft carriers near Norfolk and San Diego are not currently deployed.
In the meantime, Trump, in a conversation with reporters on Friday, commented on media reports that Gulf states had talked him out of attacking Iran.
The president said no one tried to convince him not to strike Iran, and he "convinced himself." The Oval Office chief was also asked if his pledge to provide aid to Iranian protesters still stands, to which he replied, "We'll see."
