Trump Says He "convinced Himself" Not To Attack Iran

The U.S. president revealed what influenced not his decision.

US President Donald Trump declared that he made the decision not to strike Iran on his own. "I was not persuaded by anybody. I convinced myself," he told reporters, noting that he was "greatly influenced" by Tehran's decision to cancel executions of protesters.

"They had over 800 executions by hanging scheduled. They didn't execute anyone. They canceled the executions," Trump said. However, as Reuters notes, Iranian authorities have not publicly confirmed such information.

Trump said earlier that the US would monitor Iran before deciding on military action. As AFP news agency reported on January 15, citing a senior Saudi official, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman were able to dissuade the US president from attacking for fear of destabilizing the region. The countries made "desperate last-minute diplomatic efforts," the official said.

Despite claims of peaceful intentions, the US administration continues military preparations. Fox News Channel sources reported that the U.S. is moving at least one aircraft carrier toward the Middle East to provide the president with additional military capabilities. The sources also revealed plans to build up ground and air forces in the region, as well as missile defense systems. One of the interlocutors said that in the event of a strike, the operation would be "something different, more aggressive."

Axios, citing sources, wrote that Trump has postponed a decision on strikes, but the military option remains on the table. The White House, according to the publication, was consulting with allies, including Israel, which has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of limited strikes.

Trump's statements came amid a brutal crackdown on protests in Iran that began in late December 2025. The death toll is at least 2,677, according to the U.S.-based human rights organization HRANA. An Iranian official told Reuters about 2,000 casualties. CBS News, citing sources familiar with medical reports, reported that the actual death toll could be as high as 20,000.

At the same time, Trump previously threatened to launch "previously unseen strikes" on Iran if the country's authorities began massacring anti-government protesters.
