EU Calls Emergency Ambassadors Meeting Over Trump's Tariff War Over Greenland

The meeting was set up by Cyprus.

The European Union has scheduled an emergency meeting of EU ambassadors for January 18. This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump promised to impose duties over Greenland.

This was reported by Reuters.

"Ambassadors from 27 EU countries will meet on Sunday for an emergency meeting after U.S. President Donald Trump promised to impose a wave of of duties on goods from European allies until the United States is allowed to buy Greenland," the agency writes.

Reuters specifies that the meeting was scheduled by Cyprus, which holds the EU presidency for the next few months. According to diplomats, the meeting is scheduled to start at 17:00.

On January 17, Donald Trump announced that he would impose duties against eight European countries. He said the tariffs will be imposed in two phases and will last until the Greenland issue is resolved.

"Beginning February 1, 2026, all of the aforementioned countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland) will be charged a 10% customs duty on all goods shipped to the United States. Effective June 1, 2026, the duty will be increased to 25%. This duty will be payable until an agreement is reached on the full and absolute purchase of Greenland," the American leader said.
