Europe is mobilizing to retaliate.
French President Emmanuel Macron has said Paris is not going to back down from its principled positions in the wake of US duties against allies who backed Denmark and Greenland amid Trump's encroachment on the island - as it has on supporting Ukraine.
The French president issued the statement in his X, writes "European Pravda".
Macron emphasized that France supports the principles of sovereignty and independence of states, and is guided by this in its decisions.
"That is why we support and will continue to support Ukraine, have built a "coalition of the willing" to achieve a reliable and lasting peace to protect these principles and our security. For this reason, we have decided to join the exercise that Denmark has decided to organize in Greenland..... Here we are talking about security in the Arctic and on the borders of our Europe," said the French President.
"No intimidation and threats will influence our decisions - neither on Ukraine, nor on Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world when such situations arise. Tariff threats in such a context are unacceptable and inappropriate," Emmanuel Macron emphasized.
He added that Europe will react in a united and coordinated way if Trump does not abandon his idea.
"We will ensure that European sovereignty is protected," Macron emphasized, saying he plans to talk to other European leaders about it.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump's tariff threats over Greenland a misguided approach.
On January 17, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of duties against a number of countries that disagree with his stance on Greenland.
This was preceded by a series of blunt statements from Trump about his desire to control the island.
The Greenlandic government said it would step up efforts to ensure the defense of the Arctic territory under NATO auspices, and again rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's ambitions to take over the island.
