Eight NATO Nations Issue Joint Statement On Trump's Threats

They expressed solidarity with Denmark.

Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement on U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of additional duties.

The statement appeared on the website of the German government on Sunday, January 18.

The countries noted that threats to impose duties "undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous spiral of deterioration." In particular, the countries expressed their solidarity and support for Denmark and the people of Greenland.

"We are in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Based on the process launched last week, we are ready for a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity to which we firmly adhere," the statement said.

In addition, the countries noted that as NATO members, they seek to strengthen security in the Arctic, and the military exercises conducted with allies are "consistent with this need" and "do not pose a threat to anyone."
