Because of Trump's threats to European countries.
A landmark transatlantic trade agreement between the EU and the US will not be approved by EU lawmakers after US President Donald Trump threatened eight European countries with 10 percent duties because of their stance on Greenland, writes German Wave.
This was announced by the leader of the largest faction in the European Parliament - the European People's Party (EPP) - German MP Manfred Weber, posting a corresponding entry in social network X on Saturday, January 17.
"The EPP is in favor of a trade agreement between the EU and the U.S., but given Donald Trump's threats against Greenland, its approval is impossible at this stage. We need to suspend the imposition of zero tariffs on U.S. goods," Weber wrote.
As Politico recalls, the agreement called for U.S. tariffs on imports from the EU to be set at 15 percent in exchange for the European Union waiving duties on U.S. exports.
A vote in which the European Parliament was to outline its position on eliminating tariffs on manufactured goods from the U.S. was expected on January 26, according to the publication. However, on Wednesday, January 14, the deputies postponed the decision to freeze the ratification.
Now the parliamentarians may confirm their readiness to freeze the deal as early as January 21. According to Reuters, the possible compromise was preceded by lengthy negotiations between Washington and Brussels.
