Danish General Refutes Trump's Remarks About Russian Ships Off Greenland

US President Donald Trump's statements about the presence of "Russian destroyers and submarines everywhere" around Greenland are untrue, Major General Major General Soren Andersen, commander of the Danish forces in Greenland, has said.
"I have been in command here for two and a half years and have not seen any Russian or Chinese warships," he told Le Monde.
Andersen, however, noted that Russia and China are increasing activity in the Arctic and Arctic Ocean, including Chinese ships crossing the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia. However, "there is no immediate threat to Greenland." He said Moscow could redeploy forces to the Arctic after the end of the war in Ukraine, so Denmark is strengthening its defense.
The kingdom is investing €47.8 billion to buy more fighter jets, long-range munitions, five Arctic frigates, P8-class maritime patrol aircraft and drones.
Despite Trump's threats to seize Greenland and new duties against Europe, Andersen emphasizes that cooperation with the US at the Pituffik base continues, with "relations remaining friendly."
The Arctic Endurance military mission, involving soldiers from Germany, France, Norway, Sweden and the UK, deployed to the island after Trump's statements, will last "a year, maybe two." It was launched by Europe in response to Washington's actions, the military commander said. Special forces are also expected to arrive.
"I think we will see special forces coming here for training. If you're not used to working in the Arctic, you just can't defend it," the general explained.
Andersen said French Alpine riflemen, who specialize in fighting in the mountains and are used to extremely low temperatures, can teach Danes, who are used to the cold but not the mountainous terrain, how to work in such conditions.
