Moldova Has Started The Process Of Withdrawal From The CIS

Chisinau is distancing itself from Moscow's influence.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry has started the necessary procedures for the country's complete withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This was announced by the head of the ministry Mihai Popşoi.

According to Popşoi, the Moldovan Foreign Ministry is now at the stage of denouncing the agreements underlying the organization. Among them are the CIS founding agreement and its annex, as well as the CIS charter.

"With the denunciation of these three fundamental agreements, Moldova will officially cease to be a part of the CIS. And this process has already started. We made this decision recently," the minister told Radio Moldova.

Mihai Popşoi added that after the beginning of the new parliamentary session, the legislators will start considering the denunciation documents. The minister expects this process to be completed by mid-February.

In November 2025, the Moldovan government approved the denunciation of seven CIS agreements. The country's parliament adopted in the first reading the denunciation of the agreements on visa-free travel of CIS citizens and on the principles of indirect tax collection on exports and imports of goods between the association's states. Moldova has been ignoring CIS meetings since 2022. In addition, Moldova has the status of a candidate for EU membership.
