What is the ruler silent about?
Historian Alexander Friedman believes that Venezuela and Iran have become a wake-up call for Lukashenko. He writes about this in a column for "Deutsche Welle":
- After Maduro's capture, it became clear: those who reject Trump's rules risk a highly unfavorable situation.
For Lukashenko, Venezuela and Iran became alarm bells. In Venezuela, the regime leader was captured with the help - or at least connivance - of former associates who defected to the US. In Iran, protests caused by economic problems turned into a popular uprising to overthrow the regime: it was coordinated by political emigrants, supported by the US and Western countries, and was suppressed with extreme brutality.
Lukashenko and representatives of the regime continue to impress upon the public the fundamental impossibility of repeating the "Venezuelan scenario" in Belarus. The persistent reproduction of this narrative reflects the fears of the authorities and suggests that, fearing betrayal and collusion with external forces, Lukashenko - already suspicious and prone to conspiracy - will only increase his concern for personal security and tighten the selection of personnel in the highest echelons of power.
