The U.S. president's unipartisan members in Congress may pass a resolution on Greenland.
Republicans in the US Congress are considering passing a resolution that would prohibit President Donald Trump from sending US troops to Greenland without the approval of lawmakers. This was reported by Financial Times on January 21.
According to the publication, one Republican congressman threatened Trump with impeachment proceedings if he attempts a forceful takeover of the island. Several other party representatives said they expect a resolution limiting the president's military powers to be introduced. It is expected that the document could receive the support of a majority of members of Congress.
Republican Senator Tom Tillis said on January 20 that he was trying to "de-escalate" the situation around Greenland and criticized the "bad advice" he said Trump was receiving on the issue. He expressed confidence that two-thirds of the 100 senators would support the resolution.
This assessment was echoed by Senator Rand Paul, emphasizing that "even the most determined" Republicans would not support a U.S. military invasion of Greenland.
A bill was also proposed in the Senate last week that would prohibit the U.S. military from occupying or annexing territories of NATO countries, including Greenland. One of its sponsors was Senator Lisa Murkowski, who said that "Greenland should be viewed as an ally, not an asset."
House of Representatives member Don Bacon, also representing the Republican Party, said an attempt to seize Greenland would be "the end of the Trump presidency." He said most Republicans consider such a move immoral and wrong and are prepared to oppose it.
