Trump Has Decided To Revive The Reagan-era "Star Wars" Program And The Collapse Of The Soviet Union

The U.S. president compared Gold Dome to SOI.

US President Donald Trump has said the United States has the technology to build a massive Golden Dome missile defense system, which he compared to the Ronald Reagan-era Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program known as Star Wars. "Ronald Reagan thought about it years ago, but we didn't have the right technology at the time. The idea was great, but we didn't have the technology. Now we have incredible technology," the president said on Fox.

He added that part of the system will be deployed over Greenland, emphasizing the strategic importance of the island. Trump also noted that the U.S. will get "everything it wants on the island at no cost."

The new initiative, announced as the U.S. equivalent of Israel's Iron Dome in January 2025, is actually a much more ambitious project. As the Financial Times wrote, the proposed air defense system, designed to protect the U.S. from ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles, directly inherits Reagan's SOI program in its scope and concept.

The goal of SOI was to create a U.S. missile defense "shield" to reliably cover the entire territory of North America by deploying multiple echelons of strike space weapons capable of intercepting and destroying ballistic missiles and their warheads at all points in flight.

SOI is one of the key elements of the arms race imposed by the U.S. on the USSR, which led to its collapse.
