Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has moved to a fortified underground bunker in Tehran over fears of a possible U.S. strike, and his son Massoud is leading the country instead.
The Jerusalem Post reports The Jerusalem Post.
According to the publication, amid protests sweeping the Islamic Republic and fears that the U.S. could carry out its threats to strike Iran, Supreme Leader Khamenei has moved to a "special underground shelter consisting of a series of tunnels in Tehran."
According to the report, the decision was made after an assessment of the situation by senior military and security officials of the ayatollahs' regime, who warned of the "heightened risk of a possible U.S. strike."
According to media reports, Masoud Khamenei, the ayatollah's third son, has taken over the management of the supreme leader's day-to-day duties and acts as the main channel of communication with the executive organs of the regime's government.
It is noted that the threat of a US attack has increased, coming after US President Donald Trump said on Friday that US ships were heading to Iran, and added that he "hopes we won't have to use them."
Protests in Iran
Reminder, large-scale anti-government protests have been ongoing in Iran since late 2025, starting in Tehran among businessmen unhappy with the economic situation and the fall of the national currency against the US dollar.
The protests have been joined even by cities previously considered loyal to the regime, notably Qom in the central part of the country and Mashhad in the northeast.
