EU Gives Final Approval To Abandon Russian Gas By The End Of 2027

Hungary and Slovakia voted against, but the decision was passed by qualified majority.

European Union countries on Monday, January 26, finally approved the bloc's plan to ban imports of Russian gas until the end of 2027.

According to the site of the European Council.

EU countries approved the law at a meeting in Brussels on Monday. Hungary and Slovakia voted against it, but the decision was taken by a qualified majority (72% of EU member states representing 65% of the population. - Ed.).

According to the regulations, imports of Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas into the EU will be banned six weeks after the law comes into force.

There will, however, be a transition period for member states' existing contracts.

According to the plan, the EU will permanently stop importing Russian liquefied natural gas by the end of 2026 and pipeline gas by September 30, 2027.

Countries are allowed to postpone the ban until November 1, 2027 at the latest if they experience difficulties in filling their gas storage facilities with gas from abroad on the eve of the winter heating season.

Fines for individuals and legal entities are stipulated for non-compliance with the rules.

In addition, the EU will check the country of gas production before allowing gas imports into the bloc.

The European Parliament voted in favor of the plan to refuse Russian gas in December.
