Damascus is expelling the Russian military from the country.
Moscow is losing control over a region it has used as a springboard since 2019. Russia has started redeploying its forces from its military base in Kamyshly, the capital of Syrian Kurdistan, since morning, writes "Dialogue.UA".
This is evidenced by video footage from the Kurdish TV channel K24, which shows personnel, aircraft and heavy equipment being loaded into transport planes and leaving the airfield.
Moscow has been caught up and finally pushed out of the region where it had struggled to gain a foothold during the Syrian war.
The base in question is one that Moscow used for more than 5 years as a key outpost to control northeastern Syria. Troops, equipment and helicopters were moved through Kamyshly, and the base itself played an important role in maintaining Russian influence in Kurdish areas. Now the Russian military is effectively abandoning the airfield.
The footage shows equipment being loaded in a hurry, with transport aircraft working non-stop. According to sources, the redeployment is heading towards Latakia, Russia's main stronghold on Syria's Mediterranean coast.
Painful blow
It was previously reported that Syrian authorities intend to demand that Russia leave the airfield after government forces enter territories previously controlled by the Kurdish alliance Syrian Democratic Forces. Judging by what is happening, this process has already started.
Factually, Moscow is losing another point of influence in the region. The base in Kamyshly was important not only in the military but also in the political sense: it allowed the Kremlin to keep leverage over Kurdish formations and participate in regional arrangements.
