Why Lukashenko Is Afraid Of Trump
Donald Trump

The feisty nature of the U.S. president can play a cruel joke on a dictator.

There is a suggestion that Lukashenko is frightened of many things about Trump - and the nature of these fears is similar to that which distinguishes Minsk's alliance with the Kremlin, writes Vyacheslav Korosten for "Pozirka":

- Yes, Putin is the "older brother," but the "younger" is not too cozy in his arms. Tense imperial tendencies, pathological tendency to invade neighboring countries with weapons, to dictate their own terms. It would be different then.

Trump has something in common with the Kremlin master, it is not for nothing that the American president favors the Russian president and even rolls out red carpets in front of him. Imperialism, appetite for foreign territories, free attitude to any legality. And on top of all that - a feisty character, fickleness, violent reaction to little or no external stimuli. Today he gives cufflinks, and tomorrow can and sickle on the fingers. Ilon Musk will not lie.

It was easier with Joe Biden. So were European politicians. They are predictable, respect the law, the maximum they can do is to pass sanctions, vote for a resolution, express concern. They can be dealt with in a lawless manner - they can pile up contraband, arrest trucks, or even detain a couple of their compatriots for "espionage"

That will not work with Trump, the author writes:

- The law does not apply to him. He himself is "unbendable" and will give a head start to any political gopnik on occasion. This is what is frightening in relations with such a dangerous partner.

Take, for example, the trade in "live goods", in which Lukashenko has eaten the dog. On the one hand, he doesn't want to cheap out - he already has to release important political prisoners in exchange for a symbolic easing of sanctions. On the other hand, he does not want to go overboard and offend the "master of deals" from Mar-a-Lago. The latter wants to rescue 1000+ hostages at once, and such a large wholesale deal can only be decided upon with the counterparty's generosity.
