Mark Rutte urged not to be overly restrictive on the "buy from the EU" principle.
The EU should show flexibility in the way Ukraine spends the money allocated under the loan for armament. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this at the EU Parliament in Brussels. It is about the €90 billion loan, the agreement on which was approved by the European Commission. The broadcast was carried by DRM News.
"I urge you to ensure flexibility in spending these funds and not to be overly restrictive on the 'buy from the EU' principle," Mr. Rutte said. He noted that the EU now does not have so many weapons that Ukraine can buy "for self-defense today and deterrence tomorrow". He said that without a flow of weapons from the United States, the bloc's countries will not be able to support the Ukrainian army.
The EC approved an agreement on a loan to Ukraine on January 14. The allocated funds will be divided into two parts: €60 billion will go to military purchases, €30 billion - to support the country's budget. According to the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, Ukraine will receive the first loan payments in April 2026.
