Slowing the offensive deprives Russia of a bargaining chip.
Russian occupation troops seized 152 km² of Ukrainian territory in January - almost three times less than in December last year. This was reported by "Agency" in Telegram on January 26, citing data from the DeepState project (cooperating with the Ukrainian Defense Ministry).
According to "Agency", in the last week the speed of Russian troops' advance in Ukraine fell to the values of March 2025.
The slowdown of the offensive deprives Russia of a trump card in the negotiations, which intensified last week in the UAE, the media outlet noted.
The most active advance of the occupation troops on January 1-25 was reportedly in the area between Seversk and Konstantinovka in the north of Donetsk region (59.6 km² of territory).
An additional 37.6 km² of Ukrainian territory was occupied by the Russians near Pokrovsk.
At the same time, the occupiers captured 423 km² of territory in December, and 489 km² in November.
Founder of the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT) Ruslan Leviev suggested on January 26 that the first days of February would be an anti-record for the Russian Federation: "There will be virtually no advancement in a month."
The slowdown of the Russian offensive he attributed allegedly to weather conditions, in particular - frosts.
Analysts also paid attention to the fact that the Russian advance in the area of Gulyaypol in Zaporizhzhya region has practically stopped. In their opinion, the slowdown of the Russian offensive in Ukraine could have been influenced by the battles in Mirnograd, Pokrovsk and Gulyaypol, as well as the successful counteroffensive of the defense forces near Kupyansk in Kharkiv Region.
The Agency stressed that during the past flurries of activity around the talks, Russia used the situation on the frontline as a bargaining chip in the negotiations in which it seeks to hand over all of Ukraine's Donbas to it.
But now, instead of intensifying its offensive on the frontline, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine's energy sector.
