The Royal Couple Of Denmark Arrived In Estonia

The King and Queen arrived in the Baltic country on a state visit.

King Frederick X and Queen Mary of Denmark are paying a state visit to Estonia on January 27 and 28 at the invitation of President Alar Caris, ERR.ee reports.

The visit will focus on regional security and defense cooperation based on the strong historical ties between Estonia and Denmark, including strengthening cyber defense, as well as the situation in Ukraine and providing comprehensive support to Ukraine, the press service of the presidential office said.

Since this year Estonia is the chairing country of the NB8 (Nordic-Baltic Eight - a regional cooperation format comprising Denmark, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Sweden and Estonia), taking over the leadership from Denmark, the visit will also discuss opportunities to deepen regional cooperation in defense, digital development and economy, as well as cultural cooperation, the press release said.

On Tuesday, President Alar Karis and his wife Sirje Karis welcomed the King and Queen of Denmark at a ceremony at Tallinn's Town Hall Square. The event was open to the public. The King of Denmark laid a wreath at the foot of the War of Liberation Victory Monument.

Afterward, the Estonian Head of State and his wife met with the Danish royal couple in Kadriorg. The meeting was also attended by the Estonian defense and foreign ministers and high-ranking members of the Danish delegation. Alar and Sirje Karis then visited the memorial to the victims of communism at Maarjamägi with the Danish monarchs, where they lit candles in memory of the victims of totalitarian regimes.

Afterwards, the King and Queen of Denmark met with Prime Minister Kristen Michal and his life partner Evelyn Oras at the Estonian Knighthood building. A meeting with the Speaker of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar is also scheduled.

Alar and Sirje Karis also visited the Rakett69 science studio with the royal couple, where they learned about the activities of the HK Unicorn Squad and met with girls studying robotics and technology.

On Wednesday, the King of Denmark will visit the CR14 cybersecurity training center. A reception on behalf of the royal couple will then be held at Tallinn City Hall, and the state visit will conclude with a farewell ceremony in the Danish King's Garden.

The royal couple will be accompanied on the visit by Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

King Frederik X last visited Estonia in 2018 as crown prince. The current king's mother, Margrethe II, visited Estonia in 2019. The visit was timed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia and the 800th anniversary of the Danish flag, the Dannebrog.

Denmark has never recognized the annexation of the Baltic States by the Soviet Union and was one of the first countries to restore diplomatic relations with Estonia in August 1991. Danish support was crucial for Estonia's accession to NATO and the European Union, and the country was one of the main initiators and supporters of Baltic defense cooperation.
