Zelensky is betting on the development of technology.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is betting on the development of drone technology, having proposed the appointment of Mikhail Fedorov as defense minister. This is according to Bloomberg.
The president explained that his task for Fedorov is to dramatically increase Ukraine's capabilities in the field of drones and military technology in general. As deputy prime minister and minister of digital transformation, Fedorov has already played a key role in the development of military IT solutions, the digitalization of the army and projects related to drones and communications.
Fedorov's appointment means a shift in the Defense Ministry's focus toward technology warfare, that is, scaling UAV production, accelerating the introduction of new developments, working more closely with private manufacturers and startups, and integrating digital solutions directly into combat processes.
In fact, Zelensky is betting that technological superiority and drones will be one of the main factors of Ukraine's sustainability in the war.
At the same time, The Kyiv Independent notes that he was appointed defense minister because of his effective work with the digitalization of government and military processes.
What's important to know about the now former head of the Ministry of Digital Transformation
Fedorov has been one of Zelensky's closest associates since 2019: he was a digital strategist for his presidential campaign, an adviser, a people's deputy and subsequently the youngest minister in Ukraine's history.
Under his leadership, the Diya app was launched and the "state in a smartphone" policy was implemented.
The Ministry of Digital Transformation has also been involved in projects related to drone manufacturing and military technology, particularly on the Brave1 initiative.
Importantly, Fedorov maintains contacts with technology companies and is Ukraine's main negotiator with Ilon Musk on Starlink.
In the fall of 2024, according to a Razumkov Center poll, Fyodorov was the only minister trusted by more Ukrainians than not.
Ukraine's constitution requires the final decision on the appointment of the defense minister to be made by parliament on the president's recommendation.
On January 2, Zelensky offered Mikhail Fedorov to become Ukraine's new defense minister, while Denis Shmygal was offered another line of work, he remains on the team.
